World Tour of Raw Materials – Calabrian Bergamot

Calabrian Bergamot

“Neither too sweet nor too acidic, its invigorating freshness gives wings to the perfume. Bergamot is the south, the sun, the light in the composition.”

Patricia de Nicolaï

Olfactory notes:

Like many other citrus fruits, bergamot is a hybrid.
In its case it is a hybridisation between bitter orange and lime. This partnership offers surprising inflexions depending on its stage of ripening.
Indeed, when harvested green, bergamot reveals green, tangy and very fresh notes.
Then when the producer chooses to pick them at peak maturity, the citrus has beautiful floral, sparkling and sweet qualities. Iconic fruit of Italy and of the perfume world, bergamot is an essential citrus of our perfume range.

Origin:

It is in the famous region of Calabria, in the south of Italy, that we find orchards of bergamot trees as far as the eye can see.
The rather delicate bergamot tree hardly withstands large swings in temperature whether between seasons or between day and night.
Native of Asia, the bergamot tree now finds its adopted land between the blue horizons of the Mediterranean and the Ionian seas and gives back well in return since Italy provides close to 90% of its world-wide production.

Harvest:

Bergamot oranges are harvested between November and February. The colder it is, the more their green colour fades and the more the fruits are adorned in beautiful shades of yellow.

Extraction:

Bergamot essential oil is obtained by cold expression of citrus peel; it is in fact its zest that contains all the richness of its scent.
